BUS MONITOR PROGRAM
Role of the School Bus Safety Assistant
Each year, School Bus Safety Assistants are assigned early in the fall. Thank you to the volounteers from grades 5 and 6, who take on this responsibility. They assist with providing safe travel to and from school. The responsibility of being a School Bus Safety Assistant is not taken lightly. The role may be taken away from any Safety Assistant if he/she neglects the responsibilities that are associated with being a Safety Assistant or he/she breaks the rules expected of all others at the bus stop and on the bus. The students take part in a training session whereby the responsibilities of the School Bus Safety Assistant are discussed and two training videos are viewed. The students must get consent from their parents before they can take on the responsibilities of a School Bus Safety Assistant.
As the title indicates, the students are 'Safety Assistants'. Their role would be to assist students on and off the bus where necessary, to assist students in crossing the street when getting off the bus, to be an extra set of eyes on the bus for the bus driver by watching the students on the bus and to report to the bus driver students who may be disobeying the bus rules. The School Bus Safety Assistant is by no means an enforcer of the rules. The School Bus Safety Assistant should be a role model for the students traveling on the school bus.
