PURPOSE & FUNCTION OF THE SCHOOL COUNCIL
The purpose of the School Council is to develop, encourage and promote policies, practices and activities which will enhance the quality of school programs and the levels of student achievement in the school.
The functions of the School Council are:
- to promote the educational interests of the school;
- to promote the highest quality of teaching and learning in the school;
- to facilitate parent and community involvement; and
- to advise the School Board on matters of concern to the school.
In undertaking these functions the Council is responsible for:
School Improvement
- ensuring the development of, and approving for recommendation to the Board, a plan for improving teaching and learning in the school
- supporting and promoting implementation of the school plan
Performance Assessment
- receiving information respecting performance standards in the school
- assisting in the system of monitoring and evaluating standards in the school
- receiving reports on school performance and monitoring implementation of any resulting recommendations
Communications and Community Relations
- communicating with its stakeholders, including conducting meetings with parents and members of the community on education issues
- developing strategies to assist parents to become more involved in their child=s education
- ensuring the annual school report is available to members of the public
- establishing communication procedures between the Council and the School Board
Financial Control
- approving and monitoring activities for the raising of school funds
- establishing appropriate accounting procedures for funds raised
- approving school charges in accordance with legislation
- approving the spending of funds raised for the school
The School Council may become involved in additional functions and activities depending on the needs of the school and the mutual agreement of the Council and the School Board.
A School Council may make and implement policies in the school that the Council considers necessary to carry out its functions.
